Congratulations to Club Five Dock RSL and the Club Rewards team for winning Canada Bay City Council’s “Sustainable Precinct Award”. The award is designed to encourage sustainability practises in our community and is an opportunity for Council to recognise and reward exemplary businesses, community groups and individuals who have achieved economic, social or environmental progress in the City. The Precious Gems Cub Rewards was successful in achieving this award because of the commitment the program gives to the development and support provided to the local business community.

NEW in 2012. Through my work on Local Champions and Club Rewards, and my time this year studying at the School of Social Entrepreneurs, Club Five Dock RSL is proud to be planning two great community programs.

Second Chance Toys rescues and recycles functional plastic toys for children in need in local community organisatons and they need your help.

They are asking local Five Dock area Primary and Secondary schools to organize a pre-Christmas toy drive. These toy drives are a great opportunity for parents to clean out the toy cupboard before the arrival of all those new toys at Christmas. Let’s help bring some cheer and joy to disadvantaged children and provide great toys for play and social development.

De-clutter to help kids with Second Chance Toys. Domremy College is the first school to be involved. Details and dates of individual toy drives to be announced. For further information call 9585 2081 or see www.secondchancetoys.com.au

The Benevolent Society’s social enterprise, Taste Food Tours, is coming to Five Dock. Working alongside Five Dock’s Chamber of Commerce a walking tour showcasing hidden and unique ‘foodie’ treasures is planned to be launched in early 2012.

You’ll learn about different cultures and traditions and best of all, you’ll taste a range of specialities in store and fill a sample bag to bursting with goodies you’ll collect along the way.

For more information on the various suburbs and food tours currently operated by the Benevolent Society, visit  www.tastetours.org.au

Bridgestone Select

Anthony from Bridgestone Select is a Five Dock local and has been running his mechanic, tyre and battery business for 16 years. He says that his customers value the convenience and friendly staff at Bridgestone Select and that “people keep coming back” to use his services. Anthony decided to join the Club Rewards program “to support local businesses” because Five Dock is “a good area to live in and work”. He hopes that more of the local community will visit his business with the program.

One Club member who says that he will be back at Bridgestone Select is Leo Muggleton, who used his Club Rewards card to purchase two new tyres for his car. Leo went into Club Five Dock RSL on a Friday night as usual, and was approached by a person who informed him that the club was handing out 100 extra points to members on their Club Rewards cards. Not knowing about this promotion, John, one of the Club workers, explained the process, and gave Leo a sheet containing a list of businesses where he could earn points on his card if he shopped there. "I noticed one of them was about tyres. I didn't know there was a tyre business in Five Dock- I usually go to Haberfield." So the next week, Leo rang up Bridgestone Select and asked where they were located. "I had walked or drove by their business for the last 19 years! I didn't even know they sold tyres, I thought it was a mechanic!" Leo was incredibly happy with the friendly service- "Anthony was a very nice fellow, a lovely bloke"- and was impressed by the service. "I was an hour late, but it didn't bother him.” The tyres were changed within an hour. Leo was so impressed with the service and the friendly nature of Anthony that he told him: "I'll be using you again and telling all my friends as you are so convenient." Leo described it as “such a positive experience”.

Caminiti Butchery

Sam from the Caminiti Butchery has been in business for 35 years. His business is known for their line of gourmet sausages, but Sam says that much more is available. “We have ready prepared meals and a large range of veal, beef and lamb cuts.” Sam grew up in the area and loves it for its family friendly culture. “I live in the area, my whole family lives here. I grew up here, and it’s a nice area to live in because you know everyone, it has that family feel to it.” Sam’s customers enjoy the fresh meat and good service that’s on offer, as well as a friendly chat. He says that he took part in the Club Rewards program to “give something back to the loyal customers and club members”.

Tuition with a Mission also offers Italian, Japanese and Spanish language classes. Antonio loves his work, especially when parents come and tell him that their child’s school marks have improved. “The children get better marks at school. Parents come in and tell me “My child is getting better, they are getting better marks!” I feel really good about that.” Antonio joined Club Rewards to get more exposure for his new business, and is confident that Club Five Dock RSL will help him to do so.

Between my two Cincotta chemists in Five Dock, one on Great North Road and the one on Parramatta Road (next to Office Works) we serve 5,000 customers a week, and I think this has the potential to be a great partnership.” He says that Club Five Dock RSL helps his business by creating awareness by profiling businesses, advertising and motivating members to be part of the program.

They do a lot with charity and helping the elderly. We want to associate ourselves with that sort of organisation because we are a long established company since 1852 and we do go back a long way and have helped a lot of people with real estate in the past.
